The “Indoor” Cat

“But my cat never goes outside” is something I hear on a regular basis, and this is usually followed with the question “do they need a health check and vaccines?” My answer – Absolutely YES, and here are just a few of the reasons why:

1. Your “indoor” cat needs regular check-ups.

It will depend on the age and health of your cat, but every cat should have at least a yearly health check. Cats are masters at hiding illness, and with annual visits, we can identify problems early and start appropriate care before a small issue becomes a big one.

2. Your “indoor” cat needs to be vaccinated.

Even indoor cats are exposed to disease and are at risk of infection. Some severe feline diseases are airborne and can be passed through an open window. Any contact with another cat puts your cat at risk. In some cases, it only takes one time to infect an unprotected pet. And remember, Rabies vaccinations are required by law in Ontario, and you can be fined if you do not get your pet vaccinated!

3. “Indoor” cats DO get fleas.

Fleas can piggyback into your home on clothing, visitors, and any other object they happen to jump on before it comes inside. Usually, by the time you realize you have a problem, the house is infested. By keeping your pet on parasite prevention, you stop these house invaders from becoming an issue.
